Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the 6th Harry Potter film, to arrive in theaters November 21st 2008. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright, Alan Rickman, Micheal Gambon, and Maggie Smith, this exciting second to last Harry Potter adventure should be a blast… or will it?

After watching and reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I realized that there was a huge difference between the books and the film, especially in OOTP. They left out a lot. Even though the stuff that they don’t add may be minor, it makes the movie majorly hard to understand if you haven’t read the book yet. I understand that the books are long, and the movies can’t be hours and hours (the reason for the two parts in TDH), but they can at least sqeeze in a short part!

An example of a ‘left-out’ part is, in the 4th film, the whole idea of S.P.E.W was demolished, or rather forgotten about. Also, in the beginning, at the Quittich world cup, Winky is to have stolen and “used” Harry’s wand, which was actually a huge part of the book because then Winky was set free from her master, Mr. Crouch, causing, I guess you could call it chaos, in the kitchen for the other house elves, and Dobby.

In the fifth movie, a minor part was taken out, but actually it should be major because it saves Dumbledore’s life. In the chapter where Voldemort and Dumbledore battle, the Avada Kedavra curse was shot at Dumbledore, and he was seconds away from death when Fawkes, his phoenix, flew out and ‘ate’ the curse before it hit Dumbledore. It’s a very small part, but to me it’s huge.

Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn’t counted on Romilda Vane’s chocolates! And then there’s Hermione, simpering with jealously but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

And yet…

As in all wars, life goes on. Sixth-year students learn to Apparate – and lose a few eyebrows in the process. The Weasley twins expand their business. Teenagers flirt and fight and fall in love. Classes are never straightforward, though Harry receives some extraordinary help from the mysterious Half-Blood Prince.

So it’s the home front that takes center stage in the multilayered sixth installment of the story of Harry Potter. Here at Hogwarts, Harry will search for the full and complex story of the boy who became Lord Voldemort – and thereby find what may be his only vulnerability.
